In 1992 an unknown female cyclist was having difficulties in financing her trip to Barcelona to compete in the Olympics, with the help from Gerry Ryan, the managing director of Jayco, this cyclist went on to win Australia’s first Gold medal at the 1992 Olympics, her name was Kathy Watt who then went on to become a household name.
The Jayco Cycling Team
In the later part of 1992, Jayco formed the very first professional Australian cycling team, this consisted of such riders as Olympic gold medalist Dean Woods and Scott McGrory.
The Jayco Cycling team at one stage was ranked the 54th in the world, great result for a young team based in Australia.
Jayco VIS team
The Jayco cycling team competed for around three years when it decided to merge with the Victorian Institute of Sport forming the Jayco VIS team which still exists today. The Jayco VIS team has produced world Class cyclists such as 2007 World Number 1 Road Cyclist and 2 times Tour de France runner up and Yellow Jersey Leader and Cadel Evans, Tour de France Yellow Jersey Leader Baden Cooke and 2008 Tour De France Stage 15 winner Simon Gerrans.
Jayco has had a long time association with cycling, spanning over sixteen years and has been a supporter of many cycling events over these years.
Jayco Bay Classic
In 1995 Jayco became a sponsor of the Bay Classic, the world’s fastest criterium series annually held in Geelong and Melbourne. Jayco has continued to be the major sponsor for over thirteen years.
Over this time, Jayco has sponsored a number of other events such as the tour of Tasmania and the tour of Queensland. Past winners include world class cyclists Robbie McEwan, Stuart O’Grady and Baden Cooke.
Jayco Herald Sun Tour
In 2005 Jayco increased its 15 year involvement in the Herald Sun Tour to become naming rights sponsors of Australia’s oldest stage race. The Jayco Herald Sun Tour, since its inception in 1952, has become one of Australia’s heritage sporting events, supported by local and world class cyclists, it has become an internationally ranked and recognised cycling event. Backed by Australia’s Largest Daily Newspaper, the Herald Sun, past winners of this prestigious event include Baden Cooke and Simon Gerrans.
