Whilst the weather cools across much of Australia, autumn is a great opportunity to get out and explore some of the popular spots, which are typically busy at other points in the year.
Similarly, many folks like to chase the sun and extend their summers as long as possible.
Here are some of our favourite road trips to check out in autumn across Australia.
Great Ocean Road, Victoria
An unforgettable road trip year-round, the Great Ocean Road offers unparalleled views and stunning scenery on the 664km-long journey.
Whilst the summers usually see spots such as Lorne, Wye River, Apollo Bay and Anglesea heavily booked up, autumn can offer late sunshine and the opportunity to visit the sights at a more leisurely pace.
We’d recommend setting aside a few days and taking in a few towns along the way. Consider stretching just beyond the end of the road to Port Fairy too, a charming fishing village with historical cottages, churches, great Norfolk pines and boutique shops.
Be sure to pack your wetsuit and fishing rods, as there will be plenty of opportunities to jump into the ocean or fish rivers as you go!
The Grand Pacific Drive, New South Wales
If you’re looking to extend the summer with some warmer weather, look to run a trip along the Grand Pacific Highway, stretching between Sydney and Byron Bay.
Much like the Great Ocean Road, travellers are treated to a range of spectacular views along the coast. Running through rainforests, iconic local towns and over stretches of the coast, there are plenty of opportunities to soak up some awesome experiences along the way.
The Sea Cliff Bridge isn’t to be missed – shaped like a snake, the road curls over the Pacific in Wollongong. The bridge stretches 665m long and is a great viewing platform for wildlife – both in the sea and in the sky – if you can make a pit stop for a stroll along the way. Whales are often seen here during the migration season.
Southern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland
If you’re really looking to maximise the sunshine, head towards the Southern Great Barrier Reef. Whilst areas further north are typically hit with wet weather at this time of year, this region is not usually affected with the same storms.
Use the opportunity to visit some of the pristine islands which dot the coast, dive or snorkel to experience the incredible marine life or visit some of the unique towns along the way.
If you can make it here by March, you’ll see the last of the baby turtles hatch and make their way to the sea, where they can live for up to 80 years.
Gibb River Road, Western Australia
Considered one of Australia’s greatest road trips of all time, the Gibb River Road is one to add to your bucket list!
Located in Western Australia, the Gibb River Road is truly a unique Aussie outback experience that stretches across 660km right through the heart of the Kimberely. Immerse yourself in Australia’s most amazing landscapes with spectacular gorges, rock pools and waterfalls.
The Gibb River Road Trip is a fantastic adventure and can also be an enjoyable scenic drive. The road is mainly gravel so we recommend bringing a spare tyre or two!
