The Best Autumn Caravan Trips in Australia: Where to Go in April and May

19th May 2026

There’s something genuinely special about Australia in autumn. The brutal heat of summer fades, the school holiday crowds thin out, and the landscapes shift into some of their most beautiful colours of the year. For caravanners, April and May might just be the best time to be on the road.

Whether you’re planning a weekend run to the coast or a multi-week loop through wine country and national parks, here are some of the best caravan destinations to hit this autumn — all of them made for this exact time of year.

Queensland: Head North Before It Gets Busy

Autumn is the sweet spot for Queensland’s tropical regions. The wet season has eased, humidity drops away, and the roads open up to places that are genuinely difficult to reach in the height of summer.

The Atherton Tablelands is a favourite for good reason — lush rainforest, waterfalls, farm gate produce and a cool climate that makes evenings around the campfire genuinely enjoyable. Pair it with a run up to Cape Tribulation or a stint at Mission Beach and you’ve got a trip worth every kilometre.

If you’re staying a bit further south, the Whitsundays region offers spectacular boat access from the mainland, and caravan parks around Airlie Beach and Bowen are far quieter than they’ll be come winter peak.

An self-sufficient van setup gives you the freedom to stay at unpowered sites in the region — particularly handy if you want to find your own space on the Whitsunday coast.

New South Wales: Wine Country, Mountains and the South Coast

In NSW, April and May deliver some of the country’s best driving weather. The Hunter Valley turns golden with autumn foliage and is ideal for a relaxed long-weekend run from Sydney. The food and wine scene is world-class, and caravan-friendly cellar doors are more common than you’d think.

Down south, the Sapphire Coast from Bega to Eden is quieter than summer but still warm enough to swim. And if you’ve got a few weeks up your sleeve, the Snowy Mountains region offers stunning scenery as the high country transitions into cooler temperatures.

A pop top caravan is ideal for NSW’s variety of terrain — easy to tow on the winding roads of the ranges, and comfortable enough for longer stays at coastal parks

Victoria: The Great Ocean Road at Its Best

Victoria’s Great Ocean Road in autumn is everything. Cooler temperatures make the walking tracks along the Otway Ranges genuinely pleasant, the iconic cliffs and formations look incredible in the softer autumn light, and you won’t be competing with a thousand other caravans for the best spots.

Head east through Gippsland for a completely different experience — the lakes, the forests and the unspoiled coastline around Wilsons Promontory are extraordinary in these months. Caravan parks in the region are well set up, and unpowered bush camping is available in some of the best locations.

South Australia: Flinders Ranges and the Barossa

Autumn is arguably South Australia’s finest season. The Flinders Ranges are at their most inviting — cooler days, dramatic light and virtually no flies. Wilpena Pound and the surrounding national park are some of the most spectacular places to camp in the country.

A quick detour through the Barossa Valley or Clare Valley on your way north gives you cellar door access, farm markets and some genuinely great food at the kind of relaxed pace that only a road trip allows.

If you’re venturing into the ranges, make sure your van is set up for it. The Jayco off-grid range includes models built specifically for this kind of extended, independent travel.

Western Australia: Margaret River and Beyond

WA’s South West is superb in autumn. The Margaret River region is at its coolest and most green, surf breaks are consistent, and the food and wine scene needs no introduction. It’s a well-worn caravan route for good reason — and the stretch from Busselton down to Augusta is one of the most scenically rewarding coastal drives in the country.

If you want to keep heading north, Kalbarri and the Murchison region are starting to come into their warm-weather window by May, making a longer run up the coast genuinely appealing.
