Off-Grid Power Systems Explained: Solar, Lithium and 48V in Modern Caravans
Off-grid power systems in modern caravans have become significantly more capable and more complex in recent years. Solar panels, lithium batteries, MPPT charge controllers and 48V architecture — it can feel like a lot to navigate if you’re not an electrician. Here’s a plain-English explanation of how each component works and how they fit together.
Solar Panels: Where the Energy Comes From
Solar panels convert sunlight into DC electricity. Their output is rated in watts (W) — a 200W panel will produce approximately 200 watt-hours of energy per hour of full, direct sunlight. In practice, due to angle, partial shade and temperature effects, you typically plan for 75–85% of rated output.
Most caravan rooftop panels are mono or polycrystalline silicon — the black and blue panels respectively. Monocrystalline panels are more efficient per square metre and perform better in low-light conditions, making them the better choice for roof-mounted applications where space is limited.
The solar panel array on most mid-range caravans runs from 200W to 400W. High-spec off-grid vans may have 600W or more.
MPPT Charge Controllers: The Brains of the System
The MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) controller sits between the solar panels and the battery bank. Its job is to optimise the power transfer from the panels — adjusting the electrical parameters to extract the maximum available power from the panels at any given moment, and converting it to the correct charging voltage for the batteries.
A quality MPPT controller improves charging efficiency by 20–30% over a basic PWM controller. In a real-world installation over a full travel season, this translates to meaningful additional battery charge — particularly in the low-angle sun of winter mornings.
Batteries: Storing What the Sun Provides
The battery bank stores the energy from the solar panels for use when the sun isn’t shining. As covered in our lithium vs AGM guide, the two main chemistries are:
- AGM (lead acid): reliable, affordable, but only 50% usable capacity and slower charging
- Lithium (LiFePO4): higher upfront cost, but 80–90% usable capacity, much faster charging, longer lifespan, and significantly lighter
For a serious off-grid setup, lithium batteries are the current standard. The faster charge acceptance means your solar input replenishes the bank more effectively during the available sun hours — a meaningful advantage on short winter days.
DC-DC Chargers: Charging from Your Tow Vehicle
When you’re driving between sites, your tow vehicle’s alternator can charge your caravan’s battery bank via a DC-DC charger. This is the correct and compliant way to charge from the vehicle — direct connection via a simple cable draws current in a way that can damage modern vehicle electrical systems that use smart alternators.
A quality DC-DC charger provides a regulated, staged charge to your batteries while driving — effectively making every hour of driving free battery charging.
48V Systems: The Future of Caravan Power
The Jayco Adventurer 48V represents the leading edge of factory-fitted caravan power architecture. Running at 48V rather than 12V has significant technical advantages: for a given power level, higher voltage means lower current, which means smaller cable losses, less heat generation, and more efficient energy transfer across the whole system.
48V systems allow for larger energy storage in a physically manageable format, faster and more efficient charging, and better compatibility with high-demand appliances. As lithium technology matures and battery costs continue to fall, 48V architecture is becoming the standard for premium off-grid caravans.

The individual components of an off-grid power system are only as good as the installation that connects them. Cable sizing, fusing, connection quality and system integration all determine whether the system performs as designed — and whether it’s safe to live with day after day.
