New Zealand is full of beautiful destinations, but did you know it is also home to some of the most unique as well?
From traditional Maori culture, to glowworm grottos and majestic blue lakes, here are five of our favourite unique destinations you have to visit when in New Zealand!
Waitomo Glowworm Caves (North Island)
Located on the North Island, Waitomo is a small village that is world renowned for its extensive underground river system and caves, including The Waitomo Glowworm cave. Accessible only by boat, visitors can marvel at the thousands of glowworms that adorn the caves walls in the ‘glowworm grotto’.
Brilliant blue waters of Lake Pukaki (South Island)
Our next unique destination is on the South Island, and while there are many stunning and unique bodies of water in New Zealand, it is the colour of Lake Pukaki that makes it particularly unique. Located at the foot of New Zealand’s highest peak, Mount Cook, the lake gets its colour from the glacial lakes that feed into it.

Wai-O-Tapu’s Thermal Wonderland, Rotorua (North Island)
Wai-O-Tapu is part of an active geothermal park at Reporoa Caldera, a collapsed volcanic crater which was formed over 200,000 years ago. It is located close to the township of Rotorua and is home to some of the most beautiful and unique attractions, including the Lady Knox Glacier and beautiful green, blue and orange crater lakes.
Hobbiton – a real life movie set (North Island)
This destination might not be for everyone, but it certainly is unique. Smack bang in the middle of the North Island’s Waikato region is the Hobbiton Movie set which was featured in The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit films. If you are a movie buff, make sure to check out some of the other backdrops from the movie which include Fiordland National Park and Turoa.
Experience out the Maori Culture in Rotorua (North Island)
Rotorua is deeply entrenched in Maori heritage and is the perfect place to visit if you want to learn more about the Maori culture. There are a number of villages within Rotorua that allow you to experience it first hand, including Mitai Village, Ohinemutu Village and Tamaki Maori Village.
